Wartburg Castle is a delightful place.
Prince Frederick staged a "kidnapping" of Luther after the Diet of Worms after the Emperor's edict reqired anyone finding Luther to kill him along with anyone sheltering him. Prince Frederick kept Luther safe in this castle for almost a year mostly during the year 1522. Prince Frederick, along with Luther's closest circle of friends knew how to keep a secret, as even many of Luther's supporters thought he was dead. Among Luther's important accomplishments during these months of intense work in isolation: 1) Completing a German translation of the entire New Testament. 2) Growing a manly beard for his disguise as a fashionable knight.
